the musical i chose was the ever- adored, Academy Award winning movie, The Sound of Music . i based my concept on one of the movie's most popular songs, "my favourite things". i wanted to create something that was approachable & easy to incorporate into an event, so i styled a gift table inspired by the line "brown paper packages tied up with string". the idea for the color palette came from glamour and the muted tones of the Von Trapp household. i used a 1940's dresser as my gift table and incorporated a cakestand and bowls in a lovely eggshell color, filled to the brim with sweet boxes wrapped in brown kraft paper & tied with twine. i used vintage frames above the dresser and a single bouganvilla branch added a sweet pop of color.

love how simple, but beautiful this gift table idea is.
perfect for a wedding, shower, or any type of party really.

Gigi: Fashion Forward Can Be Timeless

a little dress inspiration in honor of old musicals week here at Ever Ours. charming french actress Leslie Caron in the iconic white evening gown with iridescent feather detail from best picture oscar winner Gigi.

the exquisite dress was created by Cecil Beaton, who also did the costumes for My Fair Lady. Beaton won an Oscar for his design work in both films. below is the costume sketch for Gigi, complete with gloves, upsweep, and crescent moon hair accessory.
next to it is the gorgeous dress in real life.

winning nine academy awards in total, Gigi is a transformative musical love story set in 19th century Paris. in addition to it's commentary on marriage, the film is an interesting resource for artful wedding inspiration. it's chock-full of imaginative costumes, art nouveau decor, and bright floral concoctions.

often seen in a tuxedo or suit, Astaire eschewed fancy lapels or trendy styles, always opting for a classic, somewhat slim fit that moved. he loved Brooks Brothers; his secret weapon was an expert fit tailored to his body and personality. tailoring is a must, a precise fit can enhance your entire day, changing the way you walk, talk. it gives you effortless confidence, and there is nothing sexier than that.

get the look: crisp black and white never goes out of fashion. try a small white bow tie paired with a white shirt for a touch of timeless elegance. don't skip the boutonniere, pop a handkerchief or pocket square right below it.

if you want to express yourself, do it with accessories. this is where Astaire added whimsy, often wearing patterned ties (sometimes as a belt), or bright colored, striped socks. black and white saddle shoes are an unconventional yet still classic look.

if your groom really wants to go for it, rock the top hat, tails, and a cane. as Esquire magazine put it, "you're the life of the party, dress like it."
