well that's how Fantasy Frostings rolls.

i'm so very flattered to be able to feature Fantasy Frostings. solidly the best and most well established cake artists that i know of. not only that, they are a super fun team to work with a biting sense of humor. i'm not sure if it can get any better than that.

just read this interview and you'll understand why you need Fantasy Frostings.

Ever Ours: Fantasy Frostings. What's in a name? Who's behind it?
Fantasy Frostings: My Father came up with the name in 1970. He had pestered Mom to open up a bakery because he thought she was too good to just keep it between family and friends. Originally my parents didn’t think that we could make a living just selling cakes. So, when we first opened we also sold cake supplies. Mom also taught a decorating class at the bakery. Dad built the entire inside of the bakery. He built a spot for every box, board and pot and pan. When he was finished he asked me “ Who is the best carpenter in the world?” I said “Jesus”. Everyone but him, laughed.

Ever Ours: How did Fantasy Frostings come to be? A little background please?
Fantasy Frostings: We eventually became so busy with Wedding Cakes, that we closed the supply part of our business. We did a large wedding cake for a client in Whittier Hills, and it was catered by RoCoCo from Beverly Hills. He was so impressed with our cake that he used us for all his weddings. Within a year, through word of mouth and his support, we took off. Mom retired in 1995 and I feel that I have had the best teacher in the world.

Ever Ours: Where do you get your inspirations from?
Fantasy Frostings: Drugs, mostly. (just kidding Lydia!!)
Like most Artists, I get my inspirations from the world around me. I’m always looking around, especially at nature, and take little mental snapshots. Eventually they end up on a cake. I also will get ideas from the people around me. Mr Frostings has great ideas. He helped me in the bakery after we had been dating only a short while. He helped me design a great cake base that looked exactly like a slice of a tree. My Mother is also a great inspiration. We talk daily, and she never ceases to amaze me.
We also get a lot of ideas from other Wedding based sources. There are some great artists out there and I have fun seeing what others designers are doing.
The biggest inspirations, of course, come from the Brides we meet. Most have a vision of their wedding cake that they have carried with them since childhood. It’s our job to make it a reality. When my brother proposed to his wife, she had saved a picture taken from a magazine of her dream cake. She had saved it for years and years. It turned out to be a Fantasy Frostings cake that I had done.

Ever Ours: What's your most popular design?
Fantasy Frostings: We feel that we were one of the first to do a stacked package cake. I was on The Oprah Show 15 plus years ago with one, and it has really taken off. That is a great design that can be decorated in so many ways. We are also known for our work with buttercream. That is becoming a lost art. There are so many Designers out there that work magic with Fondant, that cant’ pipe a cake to save their life. Fondant makes for a lovely canvas, and allows us to do so many different things. But, for me, there is no more beautiful Wedding cake than one lovingly hand decorated with buttercream.

Ever Ours: Your most interesting cake to design? Most difficult?
Fantasy Frostings: We really enjoy a challenge. Wedding cakes are the most fun for us. We love incorporating the little elements of a Brides wedding vision. Making the cake as individual to that wedding as she is. Whether its the small details of her dress, or the colors and textures of the wedding, that she wants reflected in her cake. Jamie Pressly wanted to incorporate southern tradition with an old Hollywood flair. We brought the Southern traditions in with the flavors of Red Velvet and old-fashioned pound cake with fresh berries and cream. The Old Hollywood flair was realized with a very smooth buttercream icing with very petite white flowers cascading through out the cake. It was a very personal design that was very much hers.

Ever Ours: What's the process of getting Fantasy Frostings to design a cake? How long is the process?
Fantasy Frostings: It all starts with the first consultation. This is the fun part. We try to make this as fun and easy as the rest of the Wedding planning process is hard. We get to sit and chat. Get to know each other and talk about their wedding dreams. We sample cake and talk about flavors. It can be a fast process, or it can take time to flesh out what it is they are searching for. We show pictures of past designs, discuss the overall look of their wedding, and find just the right look.
We all have a budget to work with. We will find the cake that will meet those goals, and still realize the dream cake. The great misconception is that we are too expensive for the average Bride. First, there is no average Bride. Each one is special. As are our cakes. We can make one to fit the other, perfectly.

Ever Ours: Any interesting client stories to share?
Fantasy Frostings: Lots and Lots ! One of my personal favorites was Elizabeth Taylor's wedding at Neverland Ranch. I was able to wander around Neverland for the afternoon. If you ask Mr. Frostings, he will say that spending the day at The Playboy Mansion for Kendra’s wedding was his favorite. He calls it every teenage boys dream come true.

Ever Ours: Any advice to newly couples picking out their cake (other than booking Fantasy Frostings)?
Fantasy Frostings: Mr Frostings Mom used to say about a good meal “You can taste the Love”. The same with a search for the perfect cake for your occasion. What is more embarrassing than a beautiful cake that no one eats? Remember, you are serving to the most important people in your life, on your most important day to date. Meet with the Designer, spend some time asking questions. Get to know them, and try the samples. Are they interested in your ideas? Can you taste the Love? If its not in the sample, it won’t be in the design either.

Ever Ours: A day in the life of Fantasy Frostings.
Fantasy Frostings: What I love about my job, is that everyday is different. A new client, a new challenge. The phone call that asks “ Can you build the USS Enterprise by 5:00 tomorrow?” The very bestest part is being so deeply involved in peoples lives, during their most important occasions. Being a family business, we love being part of their families special events.

Ever Ours: What would your ideal cake be and why?
Fantasy Frostings: Its not for us to say. The ideal cake is one that our customers love and remember for the rest of their lives.
